At the age of 13 in his grandmother's basement "staring down at two turntables and having a vision that they were like 2 pots..he mixed up the music, cooking it and making hot”. Those ingredients spawned the birth of DJ Cookz.
DJ Cookz began deejaying, his freshman year of high school. Scratching, mixing and blending the records that his uncle who passed away left behind. Unbeknownst to the classics he was playing, the lyrics and beats of artists like Doug E. Fresh and the get fresh crew, grand master flash and the furious five were his inspiration and helped to onset the beginning of a craft he would later master.
Also known as The Showstoppa, DJ Cookz was Born Jaliyl Coleman on March 28th in the south Bronx. The love of music inspired this turn table chef to cook up the tastiest musical mixes, pleasing to the eardrums and satisfying the appetites of NYC partygoers for the past 12 years. Also a member of the BX Tag Team DJS, DJ Cookz has seasoned the booth of many NYC city hot spots. Touch, Mars 2112, Strata, Guest House, Home, Imperial and Promenade to name a few. He is also one of the official deejay's of the famous Winter wonderland ski trip that is held every year.
When one asks DJ Cookz, what he ultimately hopes to achieve as a DJ , he replies"most people say on the top looking down. But I see myself on the top looking up. I believe there is no limit to your dreams. Dreams are reality and reality are dreams. Some peoples reality is what some people dream”. DJ Cookz’s unique style of “Swag splashin” results in a sound that masters the attention of hundreds of people at one time. Whether its R&B, Throwbacks, Hip Hop, Reggae, or Salsa; This "warm up" Deejay serves and delivers each set on a hot plate. Exemplifying why he is one of the most sort after deejay’s in the NYC club scene today.
